Food for Thought #1: October

Hey y’all! I’m experimenting with a new type of post – a once-a-month, non-recipe, possibly-rambling look back at the month. Hopefully it will be a little easier to accomplish than ye olde meal plan of the month, which was Too Hard for Me.

1.// We were super on top of Halloween – like, Jay carved our pumpkin while the girls ate dinner right before trick-or-treating kind of on top of things. :o) But my mom made this glorious tail for my Angelina Ballerina:

and I also had a very sweet (and independent!) bunny, who walked most of the way around the neighborhood.

Yes, I realize I missed the opportunity for her to have a super cute tail, too. Focus on the ears (and the fact that she kept them on)!

2.// I just finished reading a book I loved: Hit the Road by Caroline B. Cooney. (Please tell me you read The Face on the Milk Carton series?? For instance, maybe, once when you were a kid and again as an adult?) I love reading young adult fiction, but this is a fun read even if you don’t typically dabble in that genre!

3.// This dark-chocolate drizzled kettle corn is available at Costco and it makes me really happy. I haven’t looked to see what the “140 calorie/serving” serving size is, but hopefully/probably it’s in the neighborhood of 30 enormous handfuls….

4.// Things I wish would appear in my kitchen ASAP:

Homemade Cinnamon Raisin Bagels from Sally’s Baking Addiction. Toasted, with a lot of butter and cinnamon sugar, please. Next time I’m in the mood for a cooking project, this is happening!

Slow Cooker Creamy Butternut Squash Soup from Foodie Blog Stalker. You don’t have to peel the squash, my friends. This is genius.

Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. Totally raiding the Halloween bucket for this one.

Creamy Pumpkin Spaghetti with Garlic Kale from Pinch of Yum. Just…I want this so much.

Peppered Beef Stew from Foodie With Family. Yes, please, I’ll take mine over the creamy polenta. Sounds glorious!

5.// Is anyone else already dreaming about their Thanksgiving meal? It’s my favorite holiday. What are your traditional must-haves?? Holla at me in the comments! :o)

  • Absolutely love your food for thought! And, yes, I'm dreaming about the Thanksgiving meal that I'll eat, but not make! I enjoy cooking on "regular" days, but the BIG day is intimidating for me. If you have some posts for easy recipes that will help folks overcome Thanksgiving meal cooking intimidation that would be awesome :-)

    • Kimberly, I must admit that I've never been the "responsible party" when it comes to the Thanksgiving meal - that would freak me out a little, too! ;o) I have a post in the works for my favorite stuffing, but I'll see if I can come up with some advice for you in others in your shoes!! :o)

  • Y'all. I don't know why some of the pictures are sideways on mobile. My research says it's not a totally uncommon problem but one that is over my head in terms of even understanding what they're talking about when people say how they fixed it. Working on it but hopefully I can solve it ahead of time in the future since I'm not sure how to fix it at this point. Sorry!!

  • Bet you just MADE.MY.DAY. Nope, make that weekend. Er, week. Probably month. Anywho - first off, I love Food for Thought! Keep it comin'! Second, I haven't read any of those books but I'm putting them on my must read list now! Third, I was reading about what you want in your kitchen and I thought, "Ohhh I thought the exact same thing when I saw Sally's bagels!" And then I saw my soup and thought, oh that sounds goo--WAIT A SECOND?! So sweet of you, thanks girl! Your kiddos looked super cute for Halloween too!

    • YAY! Also, laughing out loud at our food twin-ness. :o) I seriously am obsessed that you don't have to peel it, peeling butternut is such a pain!

  • OH! And I forgot about Thanksgiving!! It's my all-time favorite holiday as well! Traditional must haves? Hubby's Smoked Applewood Turkey and Pinch of Yum's Creamy Corn Pudding with Crispy Onions. YUM!!
